What is Islam?

The word Islam means “submission” and shares a linguistic connection with the word for “peace.” If you say Islam out loud, you can hear the similarity to the Arabic word salam or the Hebrew word shalom. Most Islamic scholars will agree that Islam means “submission to God,” which will bring peace.

It’s often asked, “If Islam brings peace through submitting to God, why do we hear so much about war and violence?” Could it be that we are all just misunderstanding something?
